Upper Svaneti LAG Provided up to 120 Families with Product Baskets Amid Covid-19

The local action group (LAG) of Mestia municipality recently launched a new charity initiative with the purpose of supporting vulnerable groups residing in Upper Svaneti to overcome challenges presented by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

In order to raise funds for the elderly and people with disabilities, an online campaign entitled “Stay Home LAG Challenge” kicked off on social media, encouraging people to upload their homemade videos, to invite their friends to join in the initiative, and to donate to the specially created bank account. Meanwhile, using the slogan “buy for those who can’t afford,” the LAG members identified particular points in the supermarkets of the town of Mestia, where people could voluntarily deposit food and other essential products/items for the initiative’s beneficiaries.

Ultimately, 180 contributors made donations enabling the LAG members to put together product baskets for 120 beneficiaries across all 17 communities of Mestia municipality.

“We didn’t expect such engagement and resonance. I would like to thank the LAG members and each and every person who contributed and made hundreds of people happy,” said Elene Ganaia, LAG Coordinator at PMC Research.

The initiative was launched as part of the project “Support to the Development of Livelihoods in Disadvantaged Rural Regions of Georgia – Mestia/Samegrelo - Upper Svaneti Region,” which is funded by the European Union with co-funding from the Austrian Development Cooperation and is being implemented by Care Austria (CARE), in collaboration with PMC Research.
